Event Details - Author, Translator, Editor: Whose Text is it Anyway?

The author-translator relationship is often complicated: one wrote the source text, the other rewrites it in the target language. So, who is the author of the translation? Sharing insights from their work together, author Maya Arad and translator Jessica Cohen will discuss their sense that editing, rather than writing, is the adequate metaphor for their work. Drawing on their joint work on the translation of The Hebrew Teacher (New Vessel Press, 2024) and Happy New Years (forthcoming from NVP, 2025), Arad and Cohen will elaborate on their work process and discuss the joys and challenges of producing an English version of a Hebrew book.
